About 15 billion years ago, with the Big Bang, an incomprehensibly large explosion, the Universe began to expand and matter, energy, space and time came into being. As the Universe expanded, the debris from this explosion began to cool down and be condensed into gas clouds, and eventually stars and planets. It was in one of these planets, our planet, the Earth, took form about 4.6 billion years ago. After that, the geological processes shaped the surface of our planet, moved the tectonic plates, built mountains and eroded them again over millions of years. These processes provided the ever changing conditions for life, which adapted to those changes. Now, the understanding of Earth has deepened greatly and new theories and technologies have been providing further insight into Earth's dynamics.
